If you work with others, you know that your priority isn’t always the priority of the team or the company. Sometimes you have a great idea that you know will benefit everyone, but you just can’t get traction from the room.
I’m going to tell you how to push your project to the top. All it takes is one word – persistence. I don’t mean you have to wait years or month – it’s usually just a matter of days.
Most people in a group jump on the easiest project, what the boss wants or what will take less time. If you have a project you really like, research it and make it as easy for the team to get behind as possible. Show how it will benefit each part of the organization and bring it up again.
Sure Karen but how do I do that? Here’s a quick example. I live in Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh had a great movie business and lots of celebrities were coming to town. I had two talented web producers on my team. I decided that it would be a great idea to cover the people coming into town and put them on our website. The idea at first went over like a lead balloon. So I let the idea go for a little while and then I brought it up again. This time I had the perfect interview in mind and had the two producers ready to go. I showed how it would increase page views which would help the bottom line. In no time at all the management team started pitching my idea for me. They came up with sponsors and additions to the section and how great it would be for their department.
The section of the website was a hit. It got sponsors and a tremendous amount of page views, more than most news stories.
If you have an idea and you want help pitching it, just let me know below and I’ll give you my thoughts.
